Reminder About Course Marketing Standards – Including E-Mail Marketing

Course providers are reminded that in all advertising, the NMLS Standards of Conduct for Approved Course Providers requires that all advertising and marketing must be truthful and be void of any misleading statements, promises, or guarantees.  Providers are also reminded that all advertising is to be in compliance with federal and state laws to include the CAN-SPAM Act which applies to e-mail marketing.  A critical compliance criterion of the CAN-SPAM law is the requirement to have a visible and operable unsubscribe mechanism present in all e-mails, and that any opt-out request is honored within 10 days.  General facts about the CAN-SPAM Act and how you can help to ensure you’re in compliance may be found on the FCC’s web site at: http://transition.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/canspam.pdf

Updated Approved/Not Approved Course Topic List Posted

NMLS has reviewed and updated the Notice on SAFE Act Approved Course Topic List.  The notice is updated annually to ensure it remains current with federal legislation/rule making and changes occurring within the industry.  Among the new topics on the approved list is the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, information in the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB) and its role in mortgage industry, and the Mortgage Assistance and Relief Services Rules (MARS).   The list has also been updated to reflect statutory changes to certain regulations in light of their transfer from other agencies to the CFPB.  The updated list is available under “Administrative Notices” in the Course Provider section of the NMLS Resource Center website.

Model Course Syllabus Posted – Comments Welcomed

NMLS has posted additional sample course syllabi in the NMLS Resource Center; there is now a sample syllabus for each approved course format.  The course syllabus contains all the information a student needs to know to successfully complete a course and serves as a useful instrument to aid instructors to ensure leaning objectives are being achieved.  The course provider community is encouraged to make use of these documents as a means to continue to make improvements to their courses.   All four model syllabus are posted as MS Word documents in the course provider section of the NMLS Resource Center. Feedback on any of the documents is welcomed and should be addressed to Jessica Ayton (jayto@csbs.org)

New Model Course Syllabus Posted

At this year’s NMLS User Conference and in subsequent conversations with members of the provider community, we have been discussing concepts of “Authentic Learning” and how to develop courses that move beyond just imparting information, and instead design them with learning objectives that place focus on the relevancy of the types of real-world tasks an MLOs is expected to perform.  To better assist providers to understand some of basic concepts of authentic learning, and as part of our ongoing effort to maintain up-to-date and useful resources, we have redesigned and updated the NMLS Model Course Syllabus. The new course syllabus incorporates examples of the type of information a student needs to know to be successful in a course.  The model syllabus is available as a MS Word document and has been posted in the course provider section of the NMLS Resource Center.  Providers are encouraged to download and use it.  Feedback is welcomed and may be sent to Jessica Ayton at Jayton@csbs.org.   Over the next few weeks, we plan to post additional examples and resources for developing an effective course syllabus for online self-study courses.  We also want to thank the nearly half-dozen providers who reviewed and provided feedback while the new syllabus was being written.
